How to tell the real thing
from a label.

The industry's own licence holder has publicly warned that unlicensed companies are selling ordinary stem cells under the Muse name. Here is how to check, in questions anyone can ask.

The evidence this is happening

One vial, tested independently

In July 2026, a laboratory in Ensenada, Mexico tested a vial that arrived labelled “30 million Muse cells, Passage 4.” The cells were healthy — 93% alive on arrival, properly handled, genuinely a competent stem cell preparation.

But only 8.43% of them carried the marker that defines a Muse cell. That is the ordinary background level of an unsorted culture. A genuinely sorted preparation at that stage should read somewhere between 62% and 76%.

The vial also contained 22.2 million cells rather than the 30 million on the label — about 74% of what was stated.

This is not an accusation about any particular seller. It is a demonstration that the label on a vial and the contents of a vial are two different things, and that the gap is measurable.

Four questions, in order of importance

  1. What percentage of this batch tested positive for SSEA-3?

    This is the question. SSEA-3 is the marker that defines a Muse cell, and the percentage is the product.

    A good answer is a specific number from this batch, on a document called a Certificate of Analysis, with the batch number matching the vial. A bad answer is a number from the brochure, a figure from a different lot, or a description of how carefully the company works.

  2. Was a sorting step actually performed, and can you show it?

    Concentrating Muse cells requires a specific laboratory procedure — magnetic or fluorescence sorting. It is the step that creates the product. Without it, the vial contains whatever the tissue naturally had.

    If the answer describes only where the cells came from — bone marrow, umbilical cord, fat — that is not an answer. Source tissue does not make something a Muse preparation.

  3. What else was measured besides SSEA-3?

    SSEA-3 also appears on some cells that are not stem cells, so on its own it is necessary but not sufficient. Thorough characterisation also checks internal genes (OCT4, NANOG, TERT) and confirms the cells can actually turn into different tissue types.

    A certificate showing SSEA-3 alone is better than nothing. A certificate showing all of it is a laboratory that knows what it is doing.

  4. What is the regulatory basis for offering this to me?

    Nothing here is approved by any regulator. Ask the clinic to explain, in writing, on what legal basis they are providing it, and what happens if something goes wrong.

    A clinic that answers this calmly and specifically is one that has thought about it. A clinic that becomes evasive or offended has told you something useful.

Things that should slow you down

Claim

“Proven better than ordinary stem cells”

No study has ever compared the two in patients. Anyone stating this as fact is either misinformed or hoping you are.

“FDA approved” or “FDA registered”

No Muse cell product is approved anywhere. Registering a facility with the FDA is not the same as having a product approved, and the words are often blurred.

A specific success rate for your condition

The published evidence covers six conditions in 67 people. Percentages quoted for anti-ageing, general wellness, or conditions outside that list do not come from trials.

“Our cells are 100% pure”

Even freshly sorted, the published peak is around 91%, and purity falls during the growing that follows. A round claim of total purity suggests nobody measured.

Urgency, or a discount that expires

A legitimate medical decision does not have a deadline attached by the seller. Time pressure exists to prevent you from checking.

Celebrity and athlete testimonials

Independent commentators have noted demand being driven by famous names on social media. A testimonial is not evidence — and demand of that kind is exactly what draws mislabelled product into a market.

Two more things worth doing

Before you commit money

Take the paperwork to your own doctor. Not the clinic's doctor — yours. Someone who knows your history and has nothing to gain from the decision. Bring the Certificate of Analysis and the consent form.

Ask what happens afterwards. Every published study included structured follow-up. A commercial treatment should too. If nobody is monitoring what happens after the infusion, nobody will learn anything from your experience — including you.

And if a supplier cannot answer the first two questions on this page with batch-specific paperwork, treat what they are selling as an ordinary mesenchymal stem cell preparation — and judge the price, the claims and the consent form accordingly.

Why we publish this

It is against our short-term interest, and that is the point

Pilargo supplies Muse cell preparations to licensed clinics. A page teaching people to interrogate suppliers makes our own sales conversations harder in the short run.

We publish it because a market where nobody checks is a market where the cheapest relabelled product wins, and that is bad for patients and eventually fatal for the science. The only durable position in a category like this is to be the supplier whose numbers survive being checked.
